Gladstone Vineyard Dakins Road Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018
Under the law of Hong Kong, intoxicating liquor must not be sold or supplied to a minor in the course of business.
From our Dakins Road Vineyard, this intensely layered Pinot Noir exudes a harmonious balance between power and elegance. The luscious aromas of red and black bramble berries are lifted by streaks of pretty florals that are complemented by a savoury minerality. A robust and structured palate finishes with a vibrant, distinguished acidity coupled with silky smooth chocolatey tannins.
92 Points | "Attractive bouquet and quite complex. Aromas of sweet oak, roses, vanilla and red fruits of ripe cherry and plum, vanilla and toasty wood spices. Equally as attractive on the palate with flavours that mirror the nose - equally complex and layered on the palate with firm chalky tannins, medium+ acidity and a savoury lengthy finish. Balanced and well made with a lengthy finish. A lovely wine to enjoy from today and through 2025." - Cameron Douglas MS
The Wairarapa is home to the first plantings of Pinot Noir in New Zealand, which dates back to the 1880s. Planted by William and Hermance Beetham, an English and French couple, who identified the environmental conditions and landscape as those similar to Burgundy gives good reason for our region to claim status as one of the world’s finest Pinot Noir producing areas.
Gladstone Vineyard, planted in 1986, is located in Gladstone; the central sub-region of the Wairarapa valley. Our vineyards are planted along the river terraces of the Ruamahanga River, which has a unique free-draining soil profile of clay over stony silt loams. The microclimatic conditions of our vineyards are semi-maritime, which experiences very cool springs, extended sunshine hours and high exposure to UV light, which provides ideal conditions for the ripening of our premium wine grapes.
The original owners of Gladstone Vineyard first started the vineyard as a hobby farm with a mere 2.7 hectares of vines planted to Sauvignon Blanc. In 1996, the property was then sold to the Kernohan family who tirelessly spent the next two decades crafting the wines whilst implementing sustainable vineyard practices to ensure premium grapes were yielded off the Home Block. In the early 2000s as the rigorous investment of time and resources started to reap rewards, the Kernohans commenced their expansion plans to satisfy the growing demand for Gladstone Vineyard wines by increasing the vineyard holdings of Pinot Noir and building a new winery.
In 2018, Eddie McDougall and a consortium under The Flying Winemaker acquired Gladstone Vineyard from the retiring Kernohans with the view to write the next exciting chapter of this prestigious wine estate. Under Eddie’s helm, Gladstone Vineyard now manages and collaborates with several premium vineyards and growers across the Wairarapa and Hawkes’ Bay; diversifying the estate’s portfolio of wines. In light of the expanding vineyard footprint, Gladstone Vineyard’s core vision remains to be the number one producer of Pinot Noir in New Zealand.

"Only from exceptional vintages will we ever release a single vineyard Pinot Noir. With our Dakins Road vineyard, we believe that this site has an incredibly consistent output of quality. The vines here are maturing well within the alluvial river terrace. Even in the most difficult of vintages, Dakins Road can still produce some immaculate fruit full of concentration and ripe tannins. The vineyard is well regarded for its ability to grow wines of power with long-term cellaring potential. When constructing this wine from the barrel selection process, we believe it is key to include some parcels that are in new oak to help complement the already dense and powerful fruit characteristics. The likely uses of long maceration periods and some whole cluster work means we are building a lot of complex elements into the wines from this site. We are careful not to over do things and be sure that we are genuinely showing off the best of the vineyard. We don't expect this wine to be consumed in its youth and believe it will hit its straps only after 3-4 years post-bottling." - Eddie McDougall
WINEMAKING & PRODUCTION:
Dakins Road was planted in 1996 and is the most unique of all our sites we manage due to its slatey soil profile and selection of Pinot Noir we have planted across the block. It has a bountiful palate of clones with both Pommard and Dijon clones available to us. In 2018, a challenging year, we found the Abel clone performed the best and most consistently; we were able to achieve consistently good ripeness and phenolic maturity in the skins and seeds.
With much better fruit off the vines, we are able to mature the wines in high-quality new barrels and for longer periods. Further to this, we chose to utilise whole cluster fermentation to extract complex tannins and aromatic profiles. We also used up to 25% of new barriques from France, which the wine matured in for 14+ months.
We ran the wine through a very coarse filter. We didn't fine the wine with chemical or natural protein agents as we let time do the work during the maturation phase.
ABOUT THIS RANGE:
A selection of clones and barrels from a specific vineyard that performs to an exceptional standard. This range is only produced in outstanding years with the intention of producing an exceptional wine that will age gracefully in the cellar for many years. A wine for the collectors and terroir thrill-seekers.
