The Asian Wine Review 2017
The world’s most trusted guide to Asian wine production, the comprehensive book includes over 200 pages of information on must-know wineries in the region, industry knowledge, and the latest business trends. Representing homegrown winemakers, the AWR aims to guide wine drinkers globally in navigating the terrain of Asian wines.
This year, around 100 Asian wineries submitted just shy of 300 wines for judging, a threefold increase from the first edition in 2016. Rigorously blind-tasted by a panel of ten judges comprising of Asia’s foremost wine experts, 171 medals were awarded to wines winning Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Best in Class. From differing wine backgrounds, judges included award-winning winemaker Eddie McDougall; Jeremy Stockman, General Manager of Watson’s Wines; Yvonne Cheung, Director of Wines of Swire Hotels; and Denis Gastin, wine critic and educator.
Wines submitted hailed from ten Asian countries. As the eighth-largest wine producer worldwide, naturally a large percentage of entries received were from China, followed by notable wineries in India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Lebanon, Myanmar, Russia, and Thailand. Wines ranged from international varietals to local grapes such as the Muscat Bailey A and Koshu in Japan, and the widely planted Cabernet Gernischt in China.
