Auntsfield Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2017
Under the law of Hong Kong, intoxicating liquor must not be sold or supplied to a minor in the course of business.
A pale straw colour with lifted and pure aromas of passionfruit, ripe citrus and lime leaf. Notes of fresh and dried herbs, gooseberry and redcurrant add pungency and intensity to the aromatics. Powerful, tight and elegant on the palate. This wine displays intense ripe fruit flavours of passionfruit juice and white peach, with citrus notes of lime and mandarin pith. The palate has intense concentration and generous weight, balanced by an underlying minerality and tight structure to shape a wine with lively tension and textural balance.
When Graeme and Linda first bought the property, there were no grapes anywhere around them. It wasn’t until they began researching the history of the land, that they realised they had just purchased Marlborough’s very first vineyard.
David Herd arrived in New Zealand in 1854 and conceived this dream of making wine on the Auntsfield Estate. The first grapes were planted in 1873 and he made wine here until his death in 1905 and his son-in-law continued his legacy until 1931. By then Auntsfield had made highly regarded wine for over 50 years. It was another 100 years before the first of the new era vines where planted in the region.
Sited at Auntsfield Vineyard, the old cellar built in 1873 has been lovingly restored to its historical glory. For the Cowley family, the cellar is the first in a long journey to restore a very special part of this region’s history.
Graeme and Linda’s sons – Ben and Luc Cowley are utterly passionate about the part they play in creating the exceptional wines made here at Auntsfield. The relationship of Ben with the land and Luc with the wine is as authentic as wine gets. Ben knows the seasons and the land better than any, this is his soil, these are his vines, his grapes. Ben believes in growing grapes of the highest quality that truly reflect the individuality of Auntsfield Estate. Luc takes the exceptional grapes his brother produces and crafts them into wines that honour the heritage of Auntsfield.
