Cien y Pico 'Doble Pasta' 2015
Under the law of Hong Kong, intoxicating liquor must not be sold or supplied to a minor in the course of business.
Extraordinary, glass staining, almost impenetrable deep hued purple, with youthful violet on the edges. Just an extraordinarily deep hued red. Warning; do not spill any of this wine on anything white, as it will leave a permanent purple stain!
A fantastic range of blueberries, damson plums and cherries. Also there are intriguing smells of fresh tea, lavender and Turkish delight, but in the main this wine smells lots of red fruit and summer berries, raspberries, redcurrants, Loganberries and blackberries combined with a little cram on top. Interestingly the smell of this has often been compared to many great (rich) wine styles and varieties but there is always a note referring to the perfumed elements on the nose.
Attaching intense fresh and uplifting powerful pure blueberry and strong red fruits, followed by complete and almost summer pudding array of juicy blackberries, delicious strawberries and cream. There is also some significant tannin as well as strong dark chocolate dominates on the pallet, supported by blueberry coulis like flavours. Once spat out but hopefully swallowed, the flavour of the wine reverberates for a long, long time in the mouth afterwards.
Cien y Pico is an exciting new producer based in Manchuela, a small region in south-eastern Spain. The debut 2007 vintage wines were both awarded Gold Medals at their first outing by the 2010 International Wine Challenge.
The name ‘Cien y Pico’ means ‘hundred and something’ and refers to the age of the ancient Garnacha Tintorera and Bobal vines from which the wines are made. The project is the result of many years of experience in the region and the personal quest of four winemakers (Australian Zar Brooks, his Bulgarian wife Elena Golakova Brooks, Spaniard Luis Juminez García and Italian Nicola Tucci) to preserve the 19th century vineyards.
Cien y Pico comprises four vineyards, all located on the Meseta (or ‘plateau’) of Castilla-La Mancha. With only 300mm of rain per year, the plateau is extremely dry, though the deep rooted, gnarled old bush-trained vines thrive in the low vigour yet limestone rich soils. The mountains surrounding the Meseta offer protection from the icy winters while, in summer, the intense sun at this altitude of nearly 1,000m warms and ripens the grapes to perfection.
